Max Noether (born September 24, 1844 – died December 13, 1921) was an important German mathematician. He worked on special areas of math called algebraic geometry and the theory of algebraic functions. People called him "one of the best mathematicians of the 1800s." He was also the father of Emmy Noether, who became a very famous mathematician herself.

Max Noether's Life Story

Max Noether was born in a city called Mannheim in Germany in 1844. He came from a wealthy family who owned a business selling hardware. His family's original name was Samuel, but it was changed to Noether in 1809. This happened because of a new rule that gave Jewish families a family name if they didn't have one already. Max was the third of five children. His parents were Hermann and Amalia Noether.

Overcoming Challenges

When Max was 14 years old, he got polio. This illness affected him for the rest of his life. Even with this challenge, he taught himself advanced mathematics. He was very determined and smart.

Education and Career

In 1865, Max went to the University of Heidelberg. After finishing his studies, he became a professor there for several years. Later, in 1888, he moved to the University of Erlangen. While working at Erlangen, he helped create a new field of math called algebraic geometry. This area combines algebra and geometry to study shapes and spaces using equations.

Max Noether's Family

In 1880, Max Noether married Ida Amalia Kaufmann. She also came from a wealthy family. They had four children together.

  • Their first child, Amalia, was born in 1882. She became known as Emmy Noether and grew up to be a very important mathematician. She made big discoveries in a field called abstract algebra.
  • Their son Alfred was born in 1883. He studied chemistry but sadly passed away in 1918.
  • Their third child, Fritz Noether, was born in 1884. Like his sister Emmy, Fritz also became a well-known mathematician.
  • Their fourth child, Gustav Robert, was born in 1889. Not much is known about him, but he was often sick and died in 1928.

Max Noether was a full professor at the University of Erlangen for many years. He passed away there on December 13, 1921.

Max Noether's Work in Mathematics

Max Noether made many important contributions to mathematics. He focused a lot on algebraic geometry. This field uses algebraic equations to describe geometric shapes.

Studying Algebraic Surfaces

Noether did a lot of work on algebraic surfaces. These are like 3D shapes that can be described by equations. He created important formulas and ideas, such as Noether's formula. This formula is a key part of a bigger math idea called the Riemann-Roch theorem for surfaces. He also developed the Noether inequality, which helps describe the properties of these surfaces.

Understanding Transformations

Noether also worked with another mathematician, Guido Castelnuovo. They showed how certain transformations work in geometry. They proved that a special group of transformations, called the Cremona group, can be made from simpler steps. This helps mathematicians understand how shapes can be changed and still keep some of their properties.
