William McKinley "Max" Venable (born June 6, 1957) is a former professional baseball player from America. He played as an outfielder and a designated hitter. Max spent 12 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) with teams like the San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos, Cincinnati Reds, and California Angels. He also played baseball in Japan for the Chiba Lotte Marines and coached in Korea for the SK Wyverns.

Max Venable's Early Life

Max Venable grew up in Rancho Cordova, California. He went to Cordova High School. Max was a talented athlete who played many sports. He was especially good at football in high school. He even turned down college scholarships for football. Instead, he chose to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers to play baseball.

Max Venable's Baseball Career

Playing in Major League Baseball

Max Venable was first chosen by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1976 amateur draft. However, the Dodgers did not protect him. In 1978, the San Francisco Giants picked him in the Rule 5 draft. This draft allows teams to select players from other teams' minor league rosters.

Max played for the Giants until 1984. Then, he was traded to the Montreal Expos. After that, he played for the Cincinnati Reds in the National League. He also played for the California Angels in the American League.

Playing in Japan

After his time in MLB, Max Venable played two seasons in Japan. He played for the Chiba Lotte Marines in 1992 and 1993. This was part of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).

Coaching Career

After his playing days, Max Venable became a coach. He coached for the Atlanta Braves in their minor league system. He also coached for the San Diego Padres. As of 2025, he is a hitting instructor. He works in the Seattle Mariners' farm system, helping young players improve their hitting skills.

Coaching in Korea

In 2013, Max Venable also coached in Korea. He signed with the Korean baseball team SK Wyverns as a hitting coach.

Max Venable's Family Life

Max Venable married Mary “Molly” Cross in May 1982. They have two sons together.

  • Will Venable: Max's older son, Will Venable, also became a professional baseball player. He was an outfielder in Major League Baseball. Will played both baseball and basketball when he was at Princeton University. He even played on the same team as his father, the Portland Beavers, in 2008. As of 2025, Will is a manager for the Chicago White Sox.
  • Winston Venable: Max's younger son, Winston Venable, played professional football. He was a player in the National Football League for the Chicago Bears. In college, Winston was a standout safety for the Boise State Broncos football team during the 2009–10 and 2010–11 seasons.
