May Power (born September 11, 1903 – died 1993) was a talented Irish sculptor. She created many beautiful artworks during her life.

Growing Up and Learning Art

May Power was born in Dublin, Ireland, on September 11, 1903. Her father, Albert Power, was also a famous sculptor. Her mother was Agnes Kelly. May grew up with a big family, having six brothers and three sisters. Her younger brother, James, also became a well-known sculptor, just like their father.

In 1912, May's family moved to Phibsborough, a part of Dublin. There, her father set up his stone carving workshop. May and James learned the basics of sculpting from their dad. Later, both May and James went to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art (DMSA). This was a special school where they could learn more about art.

While at the DMSA, May often modeled for another artist named Patrick Tuohy. She posed for him more than anyone else. May also modeled for her own father. She helped him create a bronze statue of Queen Tailte, an ancient Irish queen.

May Power's Art Career

May Power showed her sculptures regularly at the Royal Hibernian Academy. This was a big art exhibition in Ireland, and she displayed her work there between 1933 and 1951. Her art was even part of the sculpture event at the art competition during the 1948 Summer Olympics.

In 1955, May Power's sculptures were shown at an exhibition in the Hugh Lane Gallery. She exhibited alongside other talented sculptors like Leo, Desmond, and Irene Broe.

May Power and her father were both members of the Academy of Christian Art. This group started in 1934. Through the Academy, May taught art to others. She also helped to organize a large collection of religious artworks that the group gathered. She even served as the honorary secretary for the Academy.

When her father passed away in 1945, he had not finished a sculpture of Thomas Davis. Thomas Davis was an important Irish writer and politician. May Power took the plaster model of the sculpture and painted it to look like bronze. She finished it just in time for the 100-year celebration of Davis's birth. Today, the Hugh Lane Gallery has a bronze sculpture by May Power of Joseph Holloway, a famous Irish writer.
