The mayor of Taipei is the main leader of the Taipei City Government. This person is chosen for a four-year term. For a long time, being the mayor of Taipei was seen as a step towards becoming the president. For example, presidents Lee Teng-hui, Chen Shui-bian, and Ma Ying-jeou were all mayors of Taipei before they became president.

Taipei became a special city in 1967. From 1967 to 1994, the central government chose the mayor. But in 1994, people in Taipei got to vote for their mayor for the very first time.

The current mayor is Chiang Wan-an.
