Mazsalaca is a small town located in the Vidzeme region of Latvia. It is part of Valmiera Municipality. About 1,113 people live there as of 2024. The town has different names in other languages, like Piškisalāts in Livonian, Väike-Salatsi in Estonian, and Salisburg in German.

History of Mazsalaca
Early Settlements and Development
The area around Mazsalaca has a very long history. It is home to the biggest known Stone Age burial site in Northern Europe. People first settled here around 5000 BC, which is about 7,000 years ago! The town we see today started to grow in 1864. This was after a bridge was built over the Salaca river, which made it easier for people to travel and trade.
Mazsalaca During World War II
During World War II, Mazsalaca was controlled by Nazi Germany. This period lasted from July 4, 1941, until September 25, 1944. The town was part of a larger area managed by the German forces.
The Meteorite Hoax of 2009
In October 2009, news spread that a meteorite crater had been found near Mazsalaca. This created a lot of excitement! However, it later turned out to be a trick. It was part of a marketing campaign by a phone company called Tele2. They used the fake meteorite to get people talking about their brand.
