McAfee Corp. is an American company that creates software to protect people online. It focuses on keeping consumers safe from internet threats around the world. The company's main office is in San Jose, California.

McAfee has changed its name a few times since it started. It was known as McAfee Associates, Inc., Network Associates Inc., and Intel Security Group.

The company was bought by Intel in February 2011. It became part of Intel's security division. In 2017, Intel made a deal with TPG Capital. This turned Intel Security into a new company called McAfee, which was owned by both companies. Later, in 2020, McAfee's shares were sold to the public on the NASDAQ stock exchange. In 2022, a group of investors bought the company, making it private again.

Early Years (1987–1999)

The company was started in 1987 by John McAfee. It was first called McAfee Associates. John McAfee left the company in 1994.

In 1997, McAfee Associates joined with other companies like Network General and PGP Corporation. They formed a new company called Network Associates.

McAfee bought FSA Corporation in 1996. This helped them offer more than just antivirus software. They started making tools for network security and encryption. Encryption scrambles data to keep it private.

The company also created firewall products. A firewall acts like a security guard for your computer, blocking unwanted access. McAfee is still best known for its antivirus and anti-spam products.

Growth and Changes (2000–2009)

In 2000, McAfee helped protect people from the ILOVEYOU virus. This was one of the most damaging computer viruses ever.

The company changed its name back to McAfee in July 2004. This showed its focus on security technology.

In 2007, McAfee started the Security Innovation Alliance (SIA). This program helps McAfee work with other tech companies. They combine their technologies to offer better security. McAfee also made a deal with the United States Department of Defense in 2008. This allowed the DoD to use McAfee's antivirus software.

Big Changes (2010–2020)

On April 21, 2010, McAfee sent out a bad antivirus update. This update caused problems for millions of computers.

On August 19, 2010, Intel announced it would buy McAfee. The deal was worth about $7.68 billion. In 2014, Intel changed the name from McAfee Security to Intel Security. However, the products still used the McAfee name.

On September 7, 2016, Intel sold most of its share in McAfee to TPG. This made McAfee an independent cybersecurity company again. Chris Young became the CEO when McAfee became its own company in 2017.

In October 2020, McAfee became a public company again. Its shares were traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Peter Leav became the new CEO. In March 2022, a group of investors bought McAfee. This made the company private again.

Recent Developments (2021–Present)

In July 2021, McAfee sold its business that served large companies. This allowed McAfee to focus only on protecting individual consumers.

In May 2022, Greg Johnson became the new CEO of McAfee. In July 2024, Craig Boundy was appointed as president and CEO.

In October 2022, McAfee partnered with Visa. This partnership helps provide cybersecurity solutions to Visa cardholders worldwide.

In early 2024, McAfee launched a new system using AI. This system helps detect online threats in real-time. In February 2024, they improved their identity theft protection services.

In August 2024, McAfee introduced a deepfake detector. Deepfakes are fake videos or audio created using AI. In October 2024, McAfee partnered with Yahoo News. They integrated McAfee's detection technology to help check the quality of content.

In May 2025, McAfee launched its AI-powered Scam Detector. This tool automatically finds and flags scam attempts in texts, emails, and videos on phones and computers. Also in May 2025, McAfee started an initiative called "Keep it Real." This project aims to raise awareness about scams. It encourages people to share their scam experiences to help others recognize red flags and stay safer online.
