McCartyville (sometimes called McCarthyville) is a small place in Shelby County, Ohio, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

McCartyville is located in southern Van Buren Township. You can find it where two main roads, Route 29 and Route 119, meet. It's about 3 miles (5 km) south of Kettlersville and 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Sidney, which is the main city of Shelby County.

History of McCartyville

McCartyville was started in the mid-1800s. Around the same time, a nearby community called St. Patrick was also founded.

Community Life

Many of the first people who settled in both McCartyville and St. Patrick were Catholic. They decided to share important community services between the two places. The main church was located in St. Patrick. However, the community's post office was set up in McCartyville.

The Post Office

The post office in McCartyville first opened on October 3, 1876. It was originally called the "Reservoir Post Post Office." But less than a year later, on July 26, 1877, its name was changed to the "McCartyville Post Office." A woman named Mary Drees was in charge of the post office around the year 1900. The McCartyville post office closed on June 30, 1904. After that, people living in McCartyville received their mail through the post office in Anna.

Important Places

National Register of Historic Places

This rectory was built in 1911. It is so important that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as a historic building that should be protected. The Sacred Heart Catholic Church itself became a separate church from the one in St. Patrick in 1882.
