Who are the Ponds Named After?
The McKissack Ponds are named after the McKissack family. This family has lived in the area for a long time. The first family member to live in Florida was William Crawford McKissack. He was born in Shorterville, Alabama, in 1878 and passed away in 1958.
William Crawford McKissack was a pharmacist and also developed real estate. He moved to Carrabelle in 1903 with his wife, Mae Pickett. She was born in Apalachicola, Florida, in 1879 and passed away in 1925.
For over 50 years, William Crawford McKissack ran a drugstore in Carrabelle. It was called "The W.C. McKissack Drug Store." People often called him "Doc" McKissack, even though he was not a medical doctor. He bought about 3,000 acres of land in the Carrabelle area.
One of his grandsons was Luke McKissack (1937–2010). He became a well-known civil rights lawyer in Los Angeles. Luke's daughter, Lana McKissack (born 1984), is a film actress and producer. Since 2012, she has been married to Nathan John Moore, Jr., who is also an actor and producer.
