McLemoresville is a small town in Carroll County, Tennessee. In 2020, about 288 people lived there. It is known as the hometown and final resting place of TV star Dixie Carter and her husband, actor Hal Holbrook. Locals often call the town "McLey" (pronounced "MACK Lee").

History of McLemoresville

Long ago, in the 1800s, McLemoresville was the main town in Carroll County. It was even the county seat (the place where the county government is located) for a short time.

Early Schools and Decline

Two important schools, Bethel College (now Bethel University) and a theological school, started in McLemoresville. These schools were part of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. However, when railroad companies built tracks in the mid-1800s, they did not include McLemoresville. Because of this, the town began to shrink. Both schools later moved to McKenzie. The theological school later moved to Memphis and changed its name to Memphis Theological Seminary.

In the mid-1800s, McLemoresville was a busy place. It had many businesses, including over 11 saloons. There were also several schools with places for students to live, like the McLemoresville Collegiate Institute. The town also had inns and restaurants.

Local Schools and Community Life

The town's high school burned down in the 1940s or 1950s and was not rebuilt. The school continued to teach children up to the eighth grade. A new building was built around 1958. Today, this building, with some changes, teaches children in grades K-2 for the West Carroll School District.

The old McLemoresville Elementary School also included a junior high school. Students played basketball and were part of a band. The band and boys' basketball teams were very successful in the 1960s. They won many competitions around West Tennessee. The school also held beauty pageants for girls and had a very active Parents-Teachers Association. The school began to welcome all students in 1965 and was fully integrated in 1966. This happened smoothly when the old MTA School for African-American students closed.

Famous Residents and Local Government

McLemoresville was the beloved home of actress Dixie Carter. She worked with architect Hoyte Johnson to make her home a comfortable place for her family and friends. Her husband, Hal Holbrook, felt very at home there. The house has a beautiful "Music Room" and fireplaces built by Dixie's mother, Virginia. Her father, Halbert Carter, is remembered through the many books in the house.

Mayor Phil Williams has been the mayor of McLemoresville for 50 years as of 2024. This makes him the longest-serving mayor in Tennessee history.

The town also has a place called the McLemoresville Activities Center, or "MAC." People can rent this space for events.
