Discovering McQuady: A Small Place with History

McQuady is a quiet community in Kentucky. It has a rich past, especially with its railroad and local churches. Learning about these things helps us understand how the community grew over time.

How McQuady Got Its Name

McQuady was not always called McQuady. Its first name was "Jolly Station." This name came from a local landowner named Nelson Jolly. Later, the community was renamed McQuady. It was named after Anne McQuady, who was the first postmaster in the town. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.

The Railroad's Role in McQuady

In 1890, a new railroad line was finished. It ran right through McQuady. This line was part of the Louisville, Hardinsburg, & Western Railroad. Railroads were very important back then. They helped people and goods travel easily. Over time, this railroad line became a part of the Louisville, Henderson, & St. Louis Railroad. The railroad helped McQuady connect with other places.

Local Churches and Schools

Soon after the railroad came to town, people in McQuady started new churches.

  • Corinth Baptist Church: This church was founded by Baptist residents. They started it shortly after the railroad was completed.
  • St. Mary of the Woods Roman Catholic Church: In 1910, this Roman Catholic church was moved into McQuady. The church also ran schools for many years.
    • It had a high school from 1922 to 1932.
    • It also had an elementary school from 1922 to 1967.
    • The teachers at these schools were Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine. These sisters are part of a religious group dedicated to teaching and helping others.
