History of Mecca, Indiana

Mecca was officially started on August 7, 1890. It was planned by two friends, Samuel Hixon and Tom L. McCune. In 1913, the town had grown quite a bit, with about 1,400 people living there.

The town has had its own post office since 1888. This means people could send and receive mail right in Mecca.

Two important historical spots in Mecca are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Mecca Covered Bridge and the Wabash Township Graded School. Being on this list means they are special places worth protecting.

Geography and Location

Mecca is found in the southeastern part of Parke County. It sits right along a waterway called the Big Raccoon Creek. The town is mostly on the west side of the creek. However, a small part of it is on the east side. The famous Mecca Covered Bridge helps people cross the creek.

The town is about 6 miles (about 9.7 kilometers) west-southwest of Rockville. Rockville is the main town, or county seat, for Parke County. The Wabash River is also nearby, about 2 miles (about 3.2 kilometers) to the west. A major road, U.S. Route 41, passes close to Mecca. It is about 0.5 miles (about 0.8 kilometers) to the southeast.

According to information from 2010, Mecca covers a total area of about 0.39 square miles (1.02 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water inside the town limits.
