Early Life and Education
Melih Kibar was born in Istanbul, Turkey. He started learning music at the Istanbul Municipality Conservatory when he was just eight years old.
He went to the German High School Istanbul. Later, he studied chemical engineering at Boğaziçi University. He also earned a special degree from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth in the United Kingdom.
Starting His Music Career
Melih Kibar began his music journey while still in school. In 1970, he won first prize as a composer in the Milliyet High School Music Contest. This was a big start for him!
Until 1975, he worked with another musician named Timur Selçuk. One of his first well-known songs was Çoban Yıldızı. This song was a jingle for the Turkish selection for the Eurovision Song Contest.
His Amazing Compositions
From 1975 onwards, Melih Kibar created a huge amount of music. He composed 273 different tunes. He also wrote music for 9 musicals and 32 film musicals. He often worked with the talented lyricist Çiğdem Talu.
In 1976, he won the Golden Orange prize. This award was for the music he wrote for the movie "Hababam Sınıfı".
Eurovision and Awards
Melih Kibar took part in many music festivals around the world. He won many awards both in Turkey and other countries.
His songs represented Turkey twice at the Eurovision Song Contest. In 1986, his song "Halley" was performed in Bergen, Norway. Then, in 1995, his song "Sev!" was performed in Dublin, Ireland.
His Legacy
Melih Kibar passed away on April 7, 2005, in Istanbul. He was buried at Nakkaştepe Cemetery. He is remembered for his beautiful music and his contributions to Turkish pop music. He left behind his wife, Ethel, and his daughter, Merve.
