Early Life and Music Beginnings
Melly Goeslaw was born in Bandung, Indonesia, on January 7, 1974. Her father, Melky Goeslaw, was also a singer and songwriter. Melly was raised by her mother after her parents divorced.
When she was in elementary school, Melly loved writing poetry. Her mother encouraged her to sing, even though Melly didn't want to at first. In high school, she started writing songs. She would hum melodies and write lyrics on napkins because she couldn't play instruments yet. Melly also worked as a backing vocalist for other singers. Her family moved to Jakarta to help her music career grow. She even recorded songs at three different studios every day!
Music Career
Forming the Potret Band
In 1995, Melly met Anto Hoed and Arie Ayunir while working as a backing vocalist. She later married Anto Hoed. The three of them decided to form a band called Potret. Their first album in 1995 was very popular. Melly wrote many songs for Potret. Some of her songs for the band, like "Salah" and "Bunda," were later named some of the best Indonesian songs ever by Rolling Stone Indonesia magazine.
One of Potret's songs, "Diam" ("Silent"), caused some discussion because its music video showed violence against women. But it still won an award for the best music video interpretation.
Becoming a Solo Star
In 1999, Melly started her solo career with an album called Melly. It sold very well. But she became even more famous as a solo artist in 2002. This happened when she and her husband created the soundtrack for the hit movie Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? (What's Up with Love?). This movie soundtrack made her known as the "Queen of Soundtrack." It also won an award for Best Soundtrack at the Indonesian Film Festival.
Melly continued to create soundtracks for many other movies. These included Eiffel I'm in Love (2003), Apa Artinya Cinta? (2005), and The Butterfly (2007). She found writing songs for the religious film Ketika Cinta Bertasbih (2009) more challenging. She felt she had to be extra careful with the lyrics for that movie.
In 2005, Melly wrote a collection of short stories to celebrate her ten years in music. One of her stories was even made into a movie! In 2009, she held her first big solo concert in Jakarta. She even performed a "virtual duet" with her late father during the show.
Helping New Singers
Melly also enjoys helping new singers. She has supported the careers of pop singers like Irwansyah and Acha Septriasa. In 2011, she invited aspiring singers to share videos of themselves singing her songs online. She found several new talents this way. By 2011, she had written over 500 songs!
From 2015, Melly was a judge on a TV show called La Academia Junior Indonesia. In 2018, she created the soundtrack for the movie sequel Eiffel... I'm in Love 2. She also released new songs and collaborated with other artists. In late 2019, she held another concert to celebrate her movie and TV series soundtracks.
Recent Work
Since 2020, Melly has continued to compose new songs. She wrote "Hello" for Izellah Conelly. She also released "Siap Terluka" ("Ready to be Hurt"), which was the soundtrack for the TV show Istri Kedua. In May 2020, she released another religious song called "Berkumpul di Surga" ("Gathering in Heaven").
How Melly Writes Songs
Melly has noticed that her most popular songs are often those she writes quickly. For example, her award-winning song "Menghitung Hari" ("Counting the Days") was written in just four days. If she gets stuck while writing a song, she usually stops working on it. She believes that if a song is hard to finish, it might not be well-received. Her husband, Anto Hoed, helps by arranging the music for her songs.
Melly's song lyrics are sometimes described as "antagonistic" or "biting." She agrees with this. She writes about women living in real situations, not just about women being powerful.
Melly's Fashion Style
Melly Goeslaw is known for wearing unique and "eccentric" costumes when she performs. People have compared her style to the Icelandic singer Björk, whom Melly admires. In the late 1990s, she often dyed her hair in "wild colors" and wore heavy stage makeup. This was different from other Indonesian singers at the time who focused on more traditional beauty.
In 2008, Melly shared that she used makeup and hairstyles to hide her shyness when she first started. Now, she continues to use them because it's "part of the package" of her performances. She works with her creative team to come up with new ideas for her look.
Awards and Achievements
Melly Goeslaw's songs have won many awards. At the Indonesian Film Festival, she and her husband won Best Soundtrack for their work on Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?. This movie won three awards at the festival. The Jakarta Post newspaper calls her Indonesia's most sought-after movie songwriter. Many other singers have also had success covering her songs.
In 2009, Rolling Stone Indonesia magazine listed two of Potret's songs, written by Melly, among the 150 Best Indonesian Songs of All Time. "Salah" ("Wrong") was ranked 74th. The magazine praised Melly's "fresh, direct, and often provocative styles" in her songwriting. "Bunda" ("Mother") was ranked 110th. It was noted for being able to make anyone think of their mother.
Personal Life
Melly Goeslaw is a devoted Muslim. She is married to guitarist Anto Hoed. They have two sons, named Anakku Lelaki "Ale" Hoed and Pria Bernama "Abe" Hoed. In her free time, Melly enjoys shopping, playing with her children, and browsing the internet. She has mentioned that it's becoming harder to enjoy shopping because people recognize her so often. She prefers working backstage at concerts because she doesn't have to wear makeup or rehearse as much.
