Melrose is a small city in Monroe County, Iowa, United States. In 2020, about 110 people lived there. Melrose is often called Iowa's "Little Ireland" because many of its residents have Irish Catholic backgrounds. It is part of Iowa’s 3rd congressional district.

History of Melrose, Iowa
Melrose was officially planned and settled in 1866. This happened when a new railroad line was built through the area, bringing new opportunities for growth.
Fun Things to Do in Melrose
Every year, Melrose hosts a big Fourth of July party. This event helps raise money for the Melrose Volunteer Fire Department. The celebration includes a fun parade, tasty food, a frog race, and a tug-of-war game. It all ends with a fantastic firework show! This special day usually takes place on the Saturday after July 4th.

Public schools in Melrose are managed by the Albia Community School District. This district helps make sure students in the community get a good education.
Melrose Sports Heroes
Melrose is famous for its high school basketball team, the 1937 Melrose Shamrocks. In 1937, they won the state high school basketball championship in Iowa! This was amazing because Melrose High School only had 66 students. They were the smallest school ever to win a state basketball title in Iowa. The team had a perfect season, winning all 33 of their games. They were the first boys' basketball team in Iowa history to go undefeated.
In 2012, the Des Moines Register newspaper said the Shamrocks were one of the top ten best State tournament teams in Iowa history. The Shamrocks also made it to the State boys' basketball tournament in 1938, 1950, and 1959.
Several players and coaches from Melrose have been honored for their achievements. Walt O'Connor and Jim Thynne from the 1937 team, and Donald Knowles (a 1942 graduate), were put into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. In 2012, Coach Ad Hlubek was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. The Iowa House of Representatives even congratulated the 1937 team on their 75th anniversary. They encouraged everyone to follow the team's example and try to achieve goals that seem impossible. Later in 2012, Melrose put up a monument in the town center to honor the 1937 basketball team.
