Melvin Baker grew up in Houston, Texas. He went to Sam Houston High School there. After high school, he continued his football career in college. He played for the Texas Southern University Tigers football team. Playing college football helped him get ready for the professional leagues.
Playing in the NFL
In 1974, Melvin Baker was chosen by the Miami Dolphins in the NFL Draft. The draft is where professional teams pick new players from colleges. He was picked in the eighth round.
Melvin played three seasons in the NFL. He started with the Miami Dolphins in 1974. In 1975, he played for the New Orleans Saints, San Diego Chargers, and New England Patriots. He then played for the Houston Oilers and St. Louis Cardinals in 1976. His final NFL season was with the Buffalo Bills in 1977.
