Growing Up and Sharing Culture

Melvin Coombs was born in Mashpee, Massachusetts. His special native name was Kennupmussitaccq. This name means "Quick Foot." He finished high school in Falmouth. After that, he went to Cape Cod Community College.

Melvin loved to dance. He started dancing in competitions. These events are called pow-wows. Pow-wows are special gatherings. Native American people celebrate their culture with dancing, singing, and drumming.

Melvin also visited schools. He talked to students about Native American history and traditions. He wanted to share correct information. He helped people understand more about Native American life.

In the 1990s, Melvin worked at Plimoth Plantation. This is a living history museum. He was a cultural interpreter there. This means he helped visitors understand the Wampanoag way of life. He worked with the Wampanoag Indigenous Program.
