Exploring Melvin Village's Location

Melvin Village is located in the western part of Tuftonboro. It's where the Melvin River flows into Lake Winnipesaukee. A main road, New Hampshire Route 109, runs through the village. This road can take you about 10 miles southeast to Wolfeboro or 7 miles northwest to Moultonborough.

A Glimpse into the Past

Melvin Village hasn't changed much over the last 100 years. Many of the old buildings are still there, and not many new ones have been built. Long ago, around 1950, the village had two general stores and two gas stations. These are all gone now. The village was even mentioned in a book called Blue Highways by William Least Heat-Moon.

Water Fun and Mail Boats

The village has a marina, which is a place where boats can dock. You'll also find many cottages and homes right by the lake. One special place is Merrymount Landing. It's the only remaining stop for the mail boat on the northeastern side of Lake Winnipesaukee. Mail boats deliver mail to lakeside homes that are easier to reach by water.

Land and Water Area

The Melvin Village CDP covers a total area of about 6.1 square kilometers (2.34 square miles). Most of this area, about 4.2 square kilometers (1.60 square miles), is land. The rest, about 1.9 square kilometers (0.74 square miles), is water.
