About Menashe Kadishman's Life
Menashe Kadishman was born in what was then called Mandate Palestine. His parents, Bilha and Ben-Zion Kadishman, were Zionists. This means they supported the idea of Israel as a homeland for Jewish people.
When Menashe was 15, his father passed away. He left school to help his mother and support his family.
From 1947 to 1950, Menashe studied art with Moshe Sternschuss. He learned at the Avni Institute of Art and Design in Tel Aviv. Later, in 1954, he studied with Rudi Lehmann in Jerusalem.
In 1950, Menashe joined the Nahal infantry brigade. For three years, he worked as a shepherd on a Kibbutz called Ma'ayan Baruch. This time spent with nature and sheep greatly influenced his art later on.
In 1959, Kadishman moved to London, England. He continued his art studies at Saint Martin's School of Art and the Slade School of Art. He also learned from famous artists like Anthony Caro. His first solo art show was in London in 1965. In 1972, he moved back to Israel.
Menashe Kadishman passed away on May 8, 2015, in Tel Hashomer, Israel.
Menashe Kadishman's Art Journey
In the 1960s, Kadishman created sculptures that looked very simple. This style is called Minimalist. His sculptures often seemed to float or defy gravity. He achieved this by carefully balancing them, like in his work Suspense (1966). He also used glass and metal so the metal parts looked like they were floating. The glass allowed the world around the sculpture to become part of the art.
Sheep first appeared in his art in a big way in 1978. At the Venice Biennale, a famous art show, Kadishman showed a group of live, colored sheep as living art. Later, in 1995, he started painting hundreds, and even thousands, of sheep portraits. Each sheep painting was unique. These sheep portraits quickly became his special "trademark" in the art world.
