A Glimpse into Mengíbar's Past
Ancient Times and Roman Battles
Mengíbar is located near where the Guadalbullón river meets the famous Guadalquivir river. Another river, the Guadalimar, is also close by. Long ago, there was an ancient Iberian town called Illiturgi nearby. This town was attacked and destroyed by a Roman general named Scipio Africanus in 206 BCE. This happened during the Second Punic War, a big conflict between Rome and Carthage.
Medieval Conquest and Independence
Later, Mengíbar was taken over by Ferdinand III of Castile. This happened as part of the preparations for the siege of Jaén in 1246. For a long time during the Middle Ages, Mengíbar was just a small village, or hamlet, that belonged to the larger area of Jaén. However, in 1574, Mengíbar became independent from Jaén. This meant it could manage its own affairs.
Sports in Mengíbar
