The State Anthem of the Republic of Kazakhstan is the official song of Kazakhstan. It is often called "Menıñ Qazaqstanym", which means "My Kazakhstan" in the Kazakh language. This song became the national anthem on January 7, 2006.
It replaced an older anthem that had been used since Kazakhstan became independent in 1991. The older anthem used the same tune as the anthem from when Kazakhstan was part of the Soviet Union. The current anthem is based on a popular patriotic song from 1956. This song was created by the famous Kazakh composer Shamshi Kaldayakov and poet Jumeken Najimedenov. In 2005, the first President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, changed some of the original words before it became the official anthem.

The Anthem's Story: How it Began
The national anthem is based on a patriotic song from 1956, also called "Menıñ Qazaqstanym". This song was written during a time when the Soviet Union had a big farming plan called the Virgin Lands Campaign. This plan aimed to turn large areas of land in Kazakhstan into farms.
There is some discussion about why the song was written. Some people believe it was to celebrate this farming program. Others think it was to show that Kazakhstan should not just be a "corn belt" for Russia, but a strong nation on its own.
The Words of the Anthem: Current Version
The words of the anthem are very important. They talk about the beauty of Kazakhstan and the strength of its people. The anthem has two main parts, with a chorus that repeats.

How the Anthem is Used: Official Rules
"Menıñ Qazaqstanym" is played during important official events and public gatherings. This includes sports events where Kazakhstan's national teams are playing.
- Daily Broadcasts: Radio and TV stations in Kazakhstan play the national anthem twice a day. They play it when they start broadcasting in the morning and when they finish broadcasting at night.
- Showing Respect: While there aren't strict laws about how to act during the anthem, people usually follow certain customs. Most citizens place their hands over their hearts while singing, similar to what people do in the United States. It's also a common rule to stand up when the anthem is played.
- Military Protocol: Soldiers and officers in the Kazakh Armed Forces give a military salute when they are in uniform and the anthem is playing, unless they are already in a special formation.
Anthem Mix-Ups: Sporting Event Incidents
Sometimes, funny or embarrassing mistakes happen with national anthems. Kazakhstan's anthem has been involved in a couple of these incidents.
Wrong Anthem Played in Kuwait (2012)
In March 2012, at a shooting competition in Kuwait, a parody song from the movie Borat was accidentally played instead of the real Kazakh national anthem. The Kazakh athlete, Mariya Dmitriyenko, who had just won a gold medal, stood on the podium while the wrong song played. Her team quickly complained, and the award ceremony had to be done again with the correct anthem. It turned out someone had downloaded the wrong song from YouTube at the last minute! Kazakh officials were very upset and planned to complain to Kuwait.
Another Mix-Up in Kostanay (2012)
Earlier that same month, a similar mistake happened at a skiing festival in Kostanay, Kazakhstan. Instead of "Menıñ Qazaqstanym", the beginning of Ricky Martin's song "Livin' La Vida Loca" was played! Luckily, the correct anthem was played right after this funny mistake.
