Meriden (pronounced mair-ID-ən) is a small, unincorporated community. It is located in Meriden Township, which is part of Steele County, Minnesota, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Meriden is found near the cities of Owatonna and Waseca. You can find the community along SW 92nd Avenue, also known as County 18, close to SW 13th Street.
A Look Back at Meriden's History
Meriden was established, or "laid out," in the year 1867. This means people started planning and building the community around that time. The first settlers who came to this area decided to name it Meriden. They chose this name because one of the very first people to settle there was from a place called Meriden, Connecticut. It was a way for them to remember their old home. For many years, Meriden had its own post office, which helped people send and receive mail. However, the Meriden post office closed down in 1992.
