A Look at Merkel's History
Merkel was founded around 1870. It was first called Windmill Town. This was when the Texas and Pacific Railway was being built. In 1881, the town was renamed Merkel. It was named after S. M. Merkel, who was the first settler from Germany. The first general store opened in 1882. A post office followed in 1883.
