History of Meskill
Early Days and Name Change
The land where Meskill now stands was first owned by Francis Donahue. In 1902, the area was called Donahue Spur. This name came from its original owner. Later, in 1905, the community's post office was given a new name: Meskill. This name came from the Meskill Lumber Company, which was important to the area. The post office served the community until 1920.
Fires and New Industries
Meskill was originally a community built around the timber industry. However, a big fire in 1921 destroyed the lumber mill. This fire almost wiped out the entire community. The lumber plant was never rebuilt after the fire.
Even though the timber industry ended, Meskill found new ways to grow. In 1908, a rock quarry started in the town. A quarry is a place where rocks are dug out of the ground. These rocks were very important. They helped build the foundations for new railroad lines. They also helped create macadam roads in the county. Macadam roads are a type of road surface made from crushed stone. People from nearby correctional facilities helped with the work at the quarry.
