Metalhead in Comics
Metalhead has appeared in different comic book series, each giving him a unique role.
Mirage Comics Version
In the original Mirage Studios TMNT comics, Metal Head was a superhero. He could control his metal hair like tentacles! He was part of a team called the Justice Force. Later, he retired from being a superhero and lived a quiet life. One time, he got upset when someone tried to spy on his friend's mysterious grandfather.
IDW Comics Version
In the IDW comic series, Metalhead was built by a character named Harold Lillja. This robot was designed to fight and could be controlled from far away.
Donatello's New Body
Things got really interesting when Donatello was badly hurt in a fight. His mind was put into the Metalhead robot body to save him! Later, when Donatello got his own body back, a copy of his mind stayed in Metalhead.
Metal-Don's Story
This copy, sometimes called "Metal-Don," became a bit unstable. It had trouble dealing with emotions and past pain. After attacking Donatello, Metalhead changed into a new robot body. He then removed his emotions and ran away from the Turtles. He even tried to get rid of the Turtles later to gain access to special computers!
Metalhead in Cartoons
Metalhead has been a part of several Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon shows, each with its own version of his story.
1987 Cartoon Series
In the 1987 cartoon, Metalhead first appeared in an episode called "The Making of Metalhead." He was a robot created by Krang. Donatello reprogrammed him to help the Ninja Turtles. Metalhead could even copy the voices of the Turtles, Shredder, and April O'Neil! He was only seen one other time when Donatello tried to make him vacuum.
2003 Cartoon Series
In the 2003 cartoon, Metal Head was a member of the Justice Force, just like in the Mirage comics. He was the only member who stayed with the team through different versions of it. He also helped in the big fight against the Tengu Shredder. Metal Head appeared in a few other episodes, including "The Journal" and "Super Power Struggle."
2012 Cartoon Series
The 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series had a new take on Metalhead. Donatello built him from parts of a Kraang robot. Metalhead was meant to be like a robotic brother to the Turtles.
First Version of Metalhead
Donatello controlled Metalhead using a controller, like a video game. Metalhead was very strong in fights but too big to sneak around. One time, a Kraang alien took control of Metalhead. The Kraang-controlled robot attacked the Turtles until Donatello stopped it. Metalhead was rebuilt later and helped the Turtles fight the Kraang again.
Metalhead Rewired
Donatello changed Metalhead again in an episode called "Metalhead Rewired." This time, Metalhead had a personality like R2-D2 from Star Wars. He was small, smart, and very helpful. After a tough battle, the other Turtles wanted to get rid of Metalhead, but he escaped.
Metalhead found a portal to a Kraang prison where many mutants were locked up. The Turtles realized Metalhead was good and fought alongside him to free the mutants. Metalhead bravely stayed behind to keep the portal open for everyone to escape. He then self-destructed to destroy the portal and the Kraang. Donatello found Metalhead's head and hoped to rebuild him one day.
Alternate Universe Metalhead
In a special alternate-universe story called "Raphael: Mutant Apocalypse," a second version of Metalhead appeared. In this story, Donatello's mind was inside this robot body.
Metalhead in Video Games
Metalhead has also appeared in some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games.
Turtles in Time
He is a boss character in the classic game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. You fight him in the second level, "Alleycat Blues." He can punch and kick with extending arms and even has a machine gun in his chest! In the remake, Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, Metalhead was voiced by Wayne Grayson.
Metalhead Toys
Metalhead has been made into action figures for both the 1989 and 2012 toy lines.
