Mettmann is a special area in Germany called a Kreis, which means a district. It's located right in the middle of a larger region named North Rhine-Westphalia. Think of it like a county in some other countries.
This district is famous for a very important discovery! It's home to the Neanderthal valley. This is where scientists first found the ancient bones of a human species called Neanderthals. This discovery helped us learn a lot about early human history. The valley is named after the small Düssel River that flows through it.
What is the Mettmann Coat of Arms?
The coat of arms for the Mettmann district tells a story about its past. It features a red lion with a blue tongue. This lion is a symbol of the old Earldom of Berg, which was a powerful area long ago.
Around the lion, there's a black border. This border has special symbols that represent the two most important jobs or industries in the district's history. These were making locks and farming. A talented artist and herald (someone who designs coats of arms) named Pagenstecher from Düsseldorf created this design in 1936.
