Meyer Guggenheim (born February 1, 1828 – died March 15, 1905) was the important leader of the famous Guggenheim family. He helped his family become very wealthy and well-known.
A New Start in America
Meyer Guggenheim was born in a town called Lengnau, in Switzerland, on February 1, 1828. His family was of Jewish background. In 1847, he moved to the United States to start a new life.
He began his career by importing goods from other countries. But he and his family became very rich by investing in mining and smelting. This was one of the biggest fortunes made in the 1800s.
Building a Business Empire
Guggenheim first put his money into silver mines in Colorado. This area was known as the Leadville mining district. From mining, he started to expand his business into smelting. Smelting is the process of melting metal ore to get the pure metal out.
He built many smelting factories across the United States. He also built some in northern Mexico. As his sons grew up, they joined the family business. They took on important roles in the mining and smelting operations.
His Family
Meyer Guggenheim and his wife, Barbara, had ten children who lived to adulthood. Five of their seven sons became very active in the family's businesses.
Here are some of his children:
- Isaac Guggenheim (1854–1922)
- Daniel Guggenheim (1856–1930): After his father passed away, Daniel became the head of the family's businesses. He was very active in finding and buying mines all over the world.
