Guddu Barrage

The Guddu Barrage is a large structure on the Indus River. It is located near Kashmore in the Sindh province of Pakistan. The river flows through Miani, making the barrage important for the area.

Building the Barrage

The construction of the Guddu Barrage began on February 2, 1957. Iskander Mirza, who was the President at the time, laid its foundation stone. The barrage was finished in 1962. It cost 474.8 million rupees to build. Field Marshal Ayub Khan officially opened it in 1962.

Purpose of Guddu Barrage

The main job of the Guddu Barrage is to control the water flow in the River Indus. It helps with two important things:

  • Irrigation: It provides water for farming.
  • Flood Control: It helps prevent floods.

How the Barrage Works

The Guddu Barrage can release a huge amount of water. It can discharge 1.2 million cubic feet of water every second. It has 64 gates, and each gate is 60 feet (18 meters) wide. The highest flood level it can handle is 26 feet (8 meters).

The barrage helps water 2.9 million acres (12,000 square kilometers) of farmland. This land is in several districts of Sindh province, including Kashmore District, Jacobabad District, Larkana District, and Sukkur District. It also helps the Nasirabad District in Balochistan province. The barrage feeds important canals like the Ghotki Feeder and Begari Feeder.
