Michael Bloomberg's 2020 Presidential Campaign
Michael Bloomberg is a well-known businessman and was the Mayor of New York City for many years. He decided to run for president in the 2020 election. His campaign was called "Mike Bloomberg 2020, Inc."
Why He Ran for President
Earlier in 2019, Michael Bloomberg had said he would not run for president. However, later in the year, he changed his mind. News reports said he was thinking about running because other candidates' support was changing.
Starting the Campaign
On November 7, 2019, Bloomberg announced he was taking steps to join the race. The next day, he officially filed to be on the ballot for the Alabama Democratic presidential primary. This was one of the first steps to become a candidate.
Skipping Early States and Super Tuesday
Bloomberg decided to try a different strategy. He chose to skip the very first primary elections in states like Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina. Instead, he focused his efforts and money on states that would vote later, especially on a day called Super Tuesday.
Bloomberg spent a lot of money on his campaign. He spent over $500 million, which was the most money ever spent on a presidential primary campaign in American history. This money was used for advertising and other campaign activities.
What is Super Tuesday?
Super Tuesday is a day during the United States presidential primary elections when many states hold their primary elections or caucuses. It's a very important day because a large number of delegates are chosen. Delegates are people who will later vote for a candidate at their party's national convention. Winning on Super Tuesday can give a candidate a big boost.
The End of the Campaign
On Super Tuesday, Bloomberg won only one contest, which was the caucus in American Samoa. This was his only victory in the campaign. The very next day, on March 4, 2020, he decided to end his campaign. He then announced that he would support Joe Biden for president.
