Michael Joseph Budds (June 11, 1947 – November 19, 2020) was an American musicologist. A musicologist is someone who studies music history and culture. He was a professor for many years at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.
Professor Budds taught many classes and wrote several books. One of his books was a popular textbook about American popular music. He was also very generous. He helped create the Budds Center for American Music Studies at the University of Missouri School of Music. He was the first musicologist to be honored in the Missouri Music Hall of Fame. Budds taught at the University of Missouri for 37 years. He taught there until he passed away in 2020.

About Michael Budds
Michael Budds was born in Pana, Illinois, on June 11, 1947. His parents were Leon and Helen Budds. He went to Knox College. Later, he earned his PhD from the University of Iowa.
Budds served in the U.S. Navy. In 1982, he started teaching at the University of Missouri. He lived in Columbia, Missouri. He was a big fan of the singer Ella Fitzgerald. Michael Budds was buried in Rosemond Cemetery in Pana, Illinois.
Teaching at the University of Missouri
Professor Budds taught many different music classes. These included music history and how to appreciate music. His class called "Jazz, Pop, & Rock" was very popular. It became the most chosen class at the university.
He also studied different types of music. He researched American music, African-American music, and music from Victorian England. In 2019, he gave four million dollars to the university. This money helped start the Budds Center for American Music Studies. He created this center to honor his family.
Awards and Recognition
Michael Budds received many awards for his teaching. In 2000, he was named a William T. Kemper Fellow for Excellence in Teaching. When he retired, he was a Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus. This is a very high honor for a professor.
In 2019, he also received the William H. Byler Distinguished Professor Award. Budds was added to the Missouri Music Hall of Fame in 2009. He was the first musicologist ever to get this honor. He was also an honorary member of the music group Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
His Writings
Michael Budds wrote and helped edit many important books about music. He contributed to famous music dictionaries. He also wrote several of his own books, including:
