Michael Magner was a brave soldier born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, in 1840. He is famous for receiving the Victoria Cross. This is the highest award for bravery a soldier can get in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. It's given for amazing courage when facing an enemy.
Who Was Michael Magner?
Michael Magner was a drummer in the British Army. He served in the 33rd Regiment of Foot. This regiment later became known as the Duke of Wellington's Regiment.
In 1868, when he was 27 years old, Michael Magner took part in the Abyssinia Expedition. This was a military mission to Abyssinia (which is now Ethiopia). It was during this expedition that he showed incredible bravery.
His Brave Act
On April 13, 1868, British forces were attacking a place called Magdala in Abyssinia. The main group of soldiers found it hard to get through the gate because of many obstacles.
However, a small group of soldiers from the 33rd Regiment, along with an officer, found another way. They climbed a steep cliff. Then, they forced their way over a wall and through a very thick, thorny fence. By doing this, they managed to get around the defenders at the main gate.
Drummer Magner and another soldier named James Bergin were the very first two men to enter Magdala. Their brave actions helped the British forces succeed. For his courage, Michael Magner was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Later Life and Medal
After his heroic act, Michael Magner continued his military career. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal.
He later moved to Australia. Michael Magner passed away in Melbourne, Australia, on February 6, 1897.
His Victoria Cross medal is very important. You can see it on public display at the Museum Victoria in Carlton Gardens, Melbourne, Australia. It's a reminder of his amazing bravery.
