Michael Meeks' Basketball Journey
Playing Basketball in College
Michael Meeks played basketball for Canisius College for four years. He was a tall player, standing 6 feet 9 inches. In 1996, during his last year, he helped his team reach the NCAA Tournament. This was a big achievement, as it was their first time in this tournament since the 1950s! Even though they lost in the first round, Michael had a great college career. He became the second-highest scorer and rebounder in his school's history. In January 2007, he was honored by being added to the Canisius College Hall of Fame.
Playing for the Canadian National Team
Michael Meeks was an important player for the Canadian men's national basketball team. He played for Canada in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. He was the top scorer for his team, helping them win their group in the first round. Canada finished 7th in the Olympics. Michael also played in two world championships: in 1998 and 2002.
Life After Professional Basketball
Michael Meeks has dual citizenship, meaning he is a citizen of two countries: Canada and Germany. He gained German citizenship while playing basketball there. He grew up in Brampton, Ontario, after moving to Canada from Jamaica when he was young.
After he stopped playing professional basketball, Michael returned to Canada. In 2015, he started working for Canada Basketball. His job is to manage the development of young basketball players. He helps new talent grow and improve their skills.
