Michael Herbert Schur (born October 29, 1975) is an American television producer, writer, director, and actor. He is famous for creating and working on many popular TV shows.
Michael Schur started his career as a writer for Saturday Night Live (1997–2004). Later, he became a writer and producer for the hit show The Office (2005–2013). He even acted in The Office as a character named Mose Schrute.
He also helped create Parks and Recreation and created other popular sitcoms like Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013–2021) and The Good Place (2016–2020). His shows often have large, diverse casts and feature optimistic characters who find strong friendships and love. Michael Schur has won three Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on Saturday Night Live, The Office, and Hacks.

Early Life and School
Michael Schur was born in 1975 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His family later moved, and he grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut.
He went to William H. Hall High School in West Hartford. After high school, he studied English at Harvard University and graduated in 1997. While at Harvard, he was the president of the Harvard Lampoon, a famous humor magazine.
Career Highlights
Early Career: Saturday Night Live and The Office
From 1998 to 2004, Michael Schur was a writer for the comedy show Saturday Night Live on NBC. He became a producer for the "Weekend Update" segment in 2001. In 2002, he won his first Primetime Emmy Award as part of the SNL writing team.
After leaving Saturday Night Live in 2004, he joined The Office as a producer and writer. He wrote ten episodes for the show and won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2006. He also appeared on The Office as Dwight Schrute's cousin, Mose, in several episodes.
Creating New Shows: Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine
In 2008, Michael Schur and Greg Daniels started working on a new show called Parks and Recreation. It was first planned as a spin-off of The Office, but they decided to make it a separate show. After a slow start, Parks and Recreation became very popular and received great reviews.
Schur also used the pen name "Ken Tremendous" to write for a sports blog called Fire Joe Morgan. He later used this name for his Twitter account.
In 2013, Michael Schur teamed up with Dan Goor to create the police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The show first aired on Fox and later moved to NBC. He also co-created The PosCast, a podcast about baseball and other fun topics.
The Good Place and Recent Projects
On September 19, 2016, Michael Schur's show The Good Place began airing on NBC. This show was about philosophy and what it means to be a good person. It starred Kristen Bell and Ted Danson and became a big success. The show ran for four seasons and ended in 2020.
In 2016, Schur also co-wrote an episode of the show Black Mirror called "Nosedive". Later, he helped develop another comedy series called Rutherford Falls, which premiered in 2021.
In 2022, Michael Schur released his first book, How to Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question. It's a funny book that looks at ethical questions, similar to the ideas explored in The Good Place.
Personal Life
Michael Schur is married to J. J. Philbin. She used to be a writer for the TV show The O.C. and is the daughter of TV host Regis Philbin. Michael and J. J. have two children, a son born in 2008 and a daughter born in 2010.
He is also a vegetarian.
What Inspired Him
Michael Schur became interested in comedy when he was 11 years old. He read a funny book by Woody Allen called Without Feathers and stayed up late reading it. He has also said that Monty Python, David Foster Wallace, and The Simpsons have influenced his work.
