Michael Lawrence Slive (born July 26, 1940 – died May 16, 2018) was an American lawyer and a leader in college sports. He was best known for being the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The SEC is a big group of colleges that compete in sports. Michael Slive led the SEC from 2002 until 2015. During his time, he helped manage the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) for two years. He also worked on a committee for college basketball. He retired from his role as commissioner in 2015.

Michael Slive's Early Life and Education

Michael Slive was born in Utica, New York. He went to Dartmouth College and earned a degree in 1962. This was his first college degree. Later, he studied law. He got a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1965. He then earned another advanced law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1966.

Michael Slive's Career in Sports and Law

Michael Slive became the seventh commissioner of the SEC on July 1, 2002. Before that, he was also a commissioner for other college sports groups. He led Conference USA from 1995 to 2002. He also helped start and lead the Great Midwest Conference in 1991.

Early in his career, he worked as a lawyer in New Hampshire. He even served as a judge in Hanover, New Hampshire for five years. He was also a partner in a law firm in Chicago. Michael Slive also worked directly with college sports teams. He was an assistant director of athletics at Dartmouth College. He also worked for the Pac-12 Conference and was the director of athletics at Cornell University. In 1990, he started his own law group. This group helped colleges with legal issues related to sports.

Michael Slive's Final Years

In his later years, Michael Slive faced health challenges. He passed away on May 16, 2018, at the age of 77. He died in Birmingham, Alabama. He was survived by his wife, Liz, and their daughter, Anna.
