Michele Carey (born Michele Lee Henson; February 26, 1942 – November 21, 2018) was an American actress. She was most famous for her role as Josephine "Joey" MacDonald in the 1966 Western movie El Dorado. She also appeared in many other movies and TV shows during the 1960s and 1970s.
Growing Up and School
Michele Carey was born on February 26, 1942, in Annapolis, Maryland. Her father was a wrestling instructor at the United States Naval Academy. Her family soon moved to Rochester, Minnesota.
Michele was a very talented piano player. When she was just 13 years old, she won a national music contest. She even performed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
Later, her family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. Her father became a doctor there. Michele graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1960.
Becoming an Actress
After high school, Michele wanted to be a model. She moved to Los Angeles in 1964 with her son. She became a successful model. But she really wanted to act.
Her beautiful looks and long, wild hair helped her get noticed in Hollywood. In 1964, she appeared on TV for the first time. It was on the show The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
The next year, she had a small part in the movie How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965). Her first big movie role was in the 1966 Western El Dorado. In this film, she played a fun character named Josephine "Joey" MacDonald. She acted alongside famous stars like John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Caan.
Michele also starred in other movies. These included Live a Little, Love a Little (1968) with Elvis Presley. She was also in The Sweet Ride (1968) and Dirty Dingus Magee (1970) with Frank Sinatra.
On television, she was a guest star on many popular shows. Some of these were Mission Impossible (1969) and It Takes a Thief (1970). She also appeared in three episodes of The Wild Wild West. Other shows included The F.B.I., Starsky and Hutch, and Alias Smith and Jones.
In 1972, she played the main role in a Gunsmoke episode called "Tara". She also appeared in a pilot film for The Six Million Dollar Man (1973). Michele stopped acting in 1984. However, she came back for one last movie, In the Shadow of Kilimanjaro, in 1986.
Family Life
Michele Carey had one son. She was married to businessman Fred G. Strebel in 1999. They lived in Hillsborough, California and Rancho Mirage, California. Fred Strebel passed away in 2011.
Later Years
Michele Carey died on November 21, 2018. She was 76 years old. She passed away from natural causes in Newport Beach, California. Her son, Kevin Troy Schwanke, passed away before her.
