Mick Schumacher (born March 22, 1999) is a German racing driver. He currently races in the FIA World Endurance Championship for the Alpine team. Before this, he competed in Formula One from 2021 to 2022.
Mick grew up in Switzerland. He is the son of the famous seven-time Formula One World Drivers' Champion Michael Schumacher. His mother is Corinna Betsch, an equestrian. His uncle, Ralf Schumacher, and cousin, David Schumacher, are also racing drivers. When he first started racing, Mick used different names like 'Mick Betsch' or 'Mick Junior' to avoid too much attention because of his family.

Early Life and Family Connections
Mick Schumacher was born on March 22, 1999, in Vufflens-le-Château, Switzerland. He grew up in Gland. His father is the legendary Formula One driver Michael Schumacher. His mother, Corinna, is a champion in Western riding. Racing runs in his family! His uncle, Ralf Schumacher, was also a Formula One driver. His cousin, David Schumacher, is also a racing driver. Mick was named after Mick Doohan, a five-time motorcycle racing champion.
Mick has always looked up to his father. In 2017, he shared that his dad is his "idol" and "role model." He has even driven some of his father's championship-winning cars. He drove the Benetton B194 before the 2017 2017 Belgian Grand Prix. He also drove the Ferrari F2004 at Mugello in 2020. This was to celebrate Scuderia Ferrari's 1000th Formula One race. He even wore his father's helmet for that special event. Mick believes playing chess helps him focus and prepare mentally for races.
His Journey in Racing
Starting in Karting
Mick began his racing journey in 2008 with karting. To keep a low profile, he raced under his mother's maiden name, 'Mick Betsch'. Later, he used 'Mick Junior'. Even with these names, his talent in karting caught the eye of the racing world. In 2014, he finished second in both the European and World Karting Championships.
Moving to Formula Cars
In 2015, Mick moved up to formula racing. He started in ADAC Formula 4. The next year, he joined Prema Powerteam, a team known for its connections to the Ferrari Driver Academy. He finished second in both the 2016 ADAC Formula 4 and Italian F4 Championships.
He then competed in the MRF Challenge in India, finishing third overall. In 2017, he raced in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. He finished 12th in his first year. But in 2018, he had an amazing season. He won eight races and became the champion of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship!
Conquering Formula 2
After his success in Formula 3, Mick moved to the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2019 with Prema Racing. He won his first Formula 2 race in Hungary that year. In 2020, he continued with Prema and had a fantastic season. He won two races and had ten podium finishes. This strong performance led him to become the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Champion!
His Time in Formula One
Mick joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2019. This is a program that helps young drivers become future Formula One stars. He got to test a modern Formula One car for the first time in April 2019. He said it felt like "home" to be with Ferrari.
In 2020, he was a test driver for Alfa Romeo and Haas. He made his first practice session appearance at the 2020 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. For the 2021 season, Mick asked to use the abbreviation 'MSC' for his name on TV. This was the same abbreviation his father, Michael, used.
Racing for Haas (2021–2022)
Mick joined the Haas F1 Team as a full-time driver in 2021. He raced alongside Nikita Mazepin. He chose the number 47 for his car. His first season was tough, as the Haas car was not very competitive. He finished 19th in the championship with no points. However, he often performed better than his teammate.
In 2022, Mick stayed with Haas, partnering with Kevin Magnussen. He also became a reserve driver for Scuderia Ferrari. At the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, he had a big crash in qualifying but was thankfully unhurt. He scored his first Formula One points at the 2022 British Grand Prix, finishing eighth. A week later, at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix, he had his best Formula One result, finishing sixth!
Despite these strong results, Mick had a few more crashes during the season. At the end of 2022, Haas decided to go in a different direction, and Mick left the team. He finished 16th in the championship with 12 points.
Being a Reserve Driver (2023–2024)
After leaving Haas, Mick became a reserve driver for Mercedes-AMG in 2023. This meant he would step in if their main drivers, Lewis Hamilton or George Russell, couldn't race. He also helped out McLaren as a reserve driver. He got to test both the Mercedes and McLaren cars during this time. He continued this role for Mercedes in 2024.
Endurance Racing Adventure
In November 2023, it was announced that Mick would join Alpine's team for the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2024. This is a different type of racing, focusing on long-distance races. He achieved his first podium finish in this series at the 2024 6 Hours of Fuji, where his team finished third. He will continue to race for Alpine in the 2025 season.
