Mick Schumacher Signature

Mick Schumacher (born March 22, 1999) is a German racing driver. He currently races in the FIA World Endurance Championship for Alpine. Before this, Schumacher competed in Formula One from 2021 to 2022.

Mick grew up in Switzerland. He is the son of Michael Schumacher, a seven-time Formula One World Drivers' Champion. His mother, Corinna Betsch, is an expert in horse riding. His uncle, Ralf Schumacher, was also a Formula One driver. His cousin, David, is a sportscar racing driver.

To avoid extra attention because of his famous family, Mick first raced under different names. He used 'Mick Betsch' and 'Mick Junior'. In 2014, he finished second in the Karting World Championship. He also placed second in the Karting European Championship.

Mick started racing in junior car series in 2015. In 2016, he was runner-up in both ADAC F4 and Italian F4. After finishing third in the MRF Challenge, he moved to FIA European Formula 3. He won that championship in 2018 with Prema. He then moved to FIA Formula 2 in 2019. He won the Formula 2 title in 2020, also with Prema.

Since 2019, Mick has been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy. He was a test driver for Alfa Romeo and Haas in 2020. He then became a full-time driver for Haas in 2021. He made his Formula One debut in Bahrain. His Haas car, the Haas VF-21, did not score any points that season. His best finish was twelfth in Hungary.

Mick stayed with Haas for 2022. He scored his first Formula One points in the British Grand Prix. He then achieved his best result, sixth place, in the Austrian Grand Prix. After some crashes, Haas decided to let him go at the end of the season. In 2023, he became a reserve driver for both Mercedes and McLaren. He left these roles in 2024.

In 2024, Schumacher joined the FIA World Endurance Championship with Alpine. He achieved his first podium finish in this series at the 6 Hours of Fuji. He also got podiums at the 6 Hours of Imola and Spa-Francorchamps in 2025.

Early Life and Family

Mick Schumacher was born on March 22, 1999. His birthplace was Vufflens-le-Château, Switzerland. He grew up in Gland. His father is Michael Schumacher, a seven-time Formula One World Champion. His mother, Corinna Schumacher, is a European Champion in Western riding. Mick's sister, Gina-Maria, is also a Western rider.

His uncle, Ralf Schumacher, was a retired racing driver. He also competed in Formula One. Mick's cousin, David, is also a racing driver. Mick was named after Mick Doohan, a five-time 500cc motorcycle World Champion.

In March 2017, Mick spoke publicly about his father for the first time. He called his father "my idol" and "my role model."

Before the 2017 Belgian Grand Prix, Mick drove his father's championship-winning Benetton B194 car. He also drove another of his father's winning cars, the Ferrari F2004. This was a special event before the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello. It celebrated Scuderia Ferrari's 1000th Formula One race. Mick wore his father's helmet for this special occasion.

Schumacher believes that playing chess helps him prepare mentally for races. He said that these games help him focus. He feels they keep his mind sharp for every challenge.

Junior Racing Career

Starting in Karting

Mick Schumacher began his racing journey in 2008. To avoid too much attention, he used his mother's maiden name, 'Mick Betsch'.

In 2011 and 2012, Schumacher raced in the KF3 class. He finished 9th and 7th in the ADAC Kart Masters. He also placed 3rd in the Euro Wintercup in the KF3 class both years.

In 2013, he continued in the junior class, now called KF-Junior. He finished 3rd in the German Championship. He also took 3rd in the CIK-FIA International Super Cup. In 2014, he raced as 'Mick Junior'. He finished 2nd in the German, European, and World Championships. Even with a different name, his success in karting was noticed by the news.

Racing in Formula 4

At the end of 2014, Mick tested a Formula 4 car for Jenzer Motorsport. In 2015, he started racing in formula cars for the first time. He raced for Van Amersfoort Racing in the ADAC Formula 4, using the Schumacher name.

In 2016, Schumacher stayed in ADAC Formula 4. He switched to Prema Powerteam, a team linked to the Ferrari Driver Academy. He also raced in the Italian F4 Championship. He finished second in both championships.

Moving to Formula Three

In November 2016, Schumacher first drove a Formula 3 car. This was during the MRF Challenge in India. He raced in the Formula 2000 class. He finished 3rd overall, with four wins and nine podiums.

2017 Season

In April 2017, Schumacher made his debut in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. He raced with Prema Powerteam. He finished the season in 12th place. His best finish was 3rd at Monza. He was the lowest finisher among the four Prema drivers. However, he was the third-best rookie.

2018 Season

Schumacher continued with Prema in the 2018 FIA Formula 3 championship. He had a slow start to the season. He got his first win at the 15th race of the year at Spa-Francorchamps. Before this win, he was 10th in the championship. But he then dominated the second half of the season. He took seven more wins, including five in a row. He ended the season as champion. He had eight wins and fourteen podium finishes.

Success in FIA Formula 2

2019 Season

Schumacher moved up to the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2019. He raced with Prema Racing. In Bahrain, he finished 8th, which gave him pole position for the sprint race. He finished sixth in that race. He had some tough races with collisions and retirements.

At the Red Bull Ring, he finished 4th in the sprint race. He finished 8th in the feature race in Hungary. This gave him reverse-grid pole for the sprint race. He held onto the lead to get his first win in Formula 2. The races at Spa-Francorchamps were cancelled due to a sad accident. He ended the season in 12th place with 53 points. He had one win and one fastest lap.

2020 Season

Schumacher continued with Prema in the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship. He had a double podium finish in Hungary. He then had five podiums in a row from Spain to Monza. This included a win in the feature race at Monza. He took the championship lead at Mugello. He won the feature race in Russia and finished third in the sprint race.

In Bahrain, he qualified 10th and finished fourth in the feature race. He finished seventh in the sprint race. This meant the championship was still close going into the final race. In the final sprint race, Schumacher had tire problems. He dropped out of the points. But his main rival also had tire issues. This result confirmed Mick Schumacher as the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Champion.

Formula One Career

Schumacher joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in January 2019. He felt a strong connection to Ferrari because of his family. In April 2019, he drove a modern Formula One car for the first time. He drove the Ferrari SF90 during testing in Bahrain. He said being with Ferrari "felt like home."

Schumacher was supposed to drive in a Formula One practice session in 2020. This was at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix for Alfa Romeo. But the session was cancelled due to bad weather. He made his practice debut at the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for Haas. He later tested for Haas after the season.

Before the 2021 season, Schumacher asked to use 'MSC' as his name abbreviation. This was the same abbreviation his father Michael used. It helped tell Michael apart from his brother Ralf. Mick had used 'SCH' in Formula 2.

Schumacher raced for the Haas team in 2021. He signed a multi-year contract. He chose car number 47. His favorite numbers, 4 and 7, were already taken. Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto expected Mick to have a "very difficult" first season.

He qualified nineteenth for his first race in Bahrain. He spun on the first lap but finished sixteenth. At the next race, he crashed during a safety car period. He finished sixteenth again. He crashed heavily in practice for the Monaco Grand Prix. This meant he missed qualifying. He made one of the few overtakes in that race.

Schumacher caused qualifying in France to be stopped after a crash. But this got him fifteenth place on the grid. It was his first time reaching the second part of qualifying (Q2). He crashed in practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix. He missed qualifying. He avoided crashes on the first lap of the race. He finished twelfth. He was proud of battling with Max Verstappen. His first retirement was in Russia due to an oil leak. In Turkey, he reached Q2 and qualified fourteenth. He collided with Fernando Alonso on the first lap. Alonso later apologized. His race in Saudi Arabia ended early after a crash.

Schumacher finished his first season in nineteenth place. He did not score any points. He continued testing for Ferrari during the season.

2022 Season

Schumacher stayed with Haas for the 2022 season. He also worked as a reserve driver for Ferrari.

He qualified twelfth and finished eleventh in Bahrain. This was his best Formula One result at the time. He missed the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix after a big crash in qualifying. He was checked at the hospital and was fine. He returned for the Australian Grand Prix, finishing thirteenth. In Miami, he was in the top ten but crashed with Sebastian Vettel. He dropped to fifteenth. He reached Q3 for the first time in Spain. But he finished outside the points. He had another heavy crash in Monaco. His car split in half, stopping the race.

Schumacher improved his qualifying in Canada, starting sixth. He was running seventh until his engine failed. At the next race, the British Grand Prix, he started nineteenth. He recovered to eighth place to score his first Formula One points. A week later in Austria, he qualified seventh and finished sixth. This was his best Formula One result. It moved him to fifteenth in the championship. This was his last points finish of the season.

Haas announced they would part ways with Schumacher after the 2022 season. Nico Hülkenberg replaced him for 2023. Schumacher finished sixteenth in the championship with 12 points.

Reserve Driver Roles (2023–2024)

In December 2022, Ferrari announced that Schumacher would leave their driver academy. On the same day, Mercedes-AMG confirmed he would be their reserve driver for 2023. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said Mick was "still hungry to learn." He was also available as a reserve driver for McLaren. In June 2023, Schumacher drove the Mercedes W14 for a tire test. In July, he drove the McLaren MCL35M in testing.

Schumacher continued as a Mercedes reserve driver for the 2024 season. He shared the role with Frederik Vesti. He drove the Mercedes W15 and W13 in tests. In November 2024, it was announced that Schumacher would leave Mercedes. This was to focus on his racing with Alpine in the World Endurance Championship.

2024 Season

On November 22, 2023, it was announced that Schumacher would join Alpine's World Endurance Hypercar team for the 2024 season. His teammates included Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxivière.

The Alpine team achieved their only podium finish of the year in Fuji. They took third place in the final laps. This was Schumacher's first podium since the 2020 Sochi Formula 2 race.

2025 Season

Schumacher stayed with Alpine Hypercar for the 2025 season. His teammates in the #36 car are Frédéric Makowiecki and Jules Gounon. They have already achieved two podium finishes this season.
