History of Middelkerke
The name 'Middelkerca' was first written down in the year 1218. For a long time, before 1876, Middelkerke was mostly a farming community. People grew crops and raised animals there.
In 1902, Middelkerke became famous for something special. It was the first place in the world to clean its drinking water all the time using a method called chlorination. This process uses chlorine to kill germs in the water, making it safe to drink.
Sports and Events
Middelkerke is also known for a big sports event called the Noordzeecross. This is a cyclo-cross race that happens every February. Cyclo-cross is a type of bicycle racing that takes place on different kinds of terrain, like grass, mud, and sand. The Noordzeecross is part of a major series of races called the Superprestige.
