Middle River is a special type of water body called an estuary. An estuary is where a river meets the sea, mixing fresh water from the land with salty water from the ocean. Middle River is located in Baltimore County, Maryland, which is in the state of Maryland. It's about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of the big city of Baltimore.

This estuary stretches about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) from the community of Middle River, Maryland all the way southeast to the huge Chesapeake Bay. The land area that drains water into Middle River, called its watershed, covers about 12 square miles (31 square kilometers). This area even includes Martin State Airport.

Rivers and Creeks that Flow into Middle River
