History of Middlebourne

Middlebourne became a town way back in 1813. This happened because the Virginia General Assembly passed a law to create it. There are two cool ideas about how the town got its name.

Why is it called Middlebourne?

  • One idea is that Middlebourne was located halfway between Pennsylvania and some important salt wells. These salt wells were found along the Kanawha River, which is upstream from Charleston.
  • The other idea is that the town sits right in the middle of Middle Island Creek. This creek flows through the town, from where it starts to where it ends.

The historic Tyler County Courthouse and Jail building is a very important place in Middlebourne. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
