History of Middletown
Middletown was founded in 1832, making it the oldest town in Logan County, Illinois. For a while, people even thought about making Middletown the capital city of Illinois!
Abraham Lincoln's Connection
In the mid-to-late 1800s, lawmakers often stopped overnight in Middletown. They were traveling between Springfield and Peoria. It is believed that Abraham Lincoln himself stayed at the Stage Coach Inn. This inn, located near the town square, is the oldest wooden building of its kind in Illinois.
Middletown has a proven link to Abraham Lincoln. He helped survey the land where the town was built. This happened during his early days working as a surveyor in Logan County.
Local Landmarks and Achievements
The village is also home to the Knapp library and museum. The Knapp building is the oldest brick building in Logan County.
Middletown has a history with aviation too! Several hot air balloon records were set here. The historic Vin Fiz, which was the first airplane to fly across the United States, also made a stop in Middletown during its journey.
In June 2007, Middletown celebrated its 175th birthday, a special event called a Terquasquicentennial.
