Miguel Herrero y Rodríguez de Miñón was born on June 18, 1940. He is a Spanish lawyer and politician. He was a member of different political parties, including the Union of the Democratic Centre and later the People's Party. He is well-known for being one of the "Fathers of the Constitution". These were seven important lawmakers who helped write the Spanish Constitution in 1978.
Education and Early Career
Miguel Herrero's father was a high school teacher. Miguel studied law in Madrid. He was a very dedicated student. He finished his first law degree in 1961. In 1965, he earned his doctorate degree. His special study was about constitutional law. This type of law deals with how a country is governed.
He continued his studies in other countries. He went to Oxford in England, Paris in France, and Louvain in Belgium. In Louvain, he also earned a degree in Philosophy in 1968. Since 1966, he worked as a lawyer for the Council of State. This is a group that advises the government on legal matters. He also wrote for newspapers. He shared his ideas about how Spain should change after the time of Francisco Franco.
In 1975, he married Cristina Jáuregui Segurola. They were married until she passed away in 2015.
Political Journey
Miguel Herrero y Rodríguez de Miñón played a big role in Spanish politics. He was the Technical Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice. In this job, he helped with important laws. These included the first amnesty law in 1976. This law allowed people who had been punished for political reasons to be forgiven. He also helped create the Law for Political Reform. This law was important for Spain's new democracy. He also helped with the first rules for elections.
He was a key person in writing the 1978 Constitution. This document set up Spain's modern democratic system. He also served as a spokesperson in the Congress of Deputies. This is like the parliament where laws are made. He was a deputy for the UCD party from 1977 to 1981.
In February 1982, he left the UCD party. In July of that year, he joined Alianza Popular. He was elected as a deputy for Alianza Popular and later for the People's Party. This happened in the elections of 1982, 1986, and 1989.
In 1979, he was elected as a city council member for Madrid. In 1987, he tried to become the leader of Alianza Popular. However, he was not chosen for that role.
