Early Life and Education
Miguel Saiz was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He later moved to Argentina. He studied at the National University of Córdoba. After his studies, he became a lawyer. A lawyer is a professional who helps people with legal matters.
Starting His Political Journey
Saiz joined the Radical Civic Union (UCR) party in 1983. This party is known for its centrist ideas. He held several important roles early in his career. He was the Vice President of the Forensic Fund of Río Negro. He also led the insurance part of the SanCor cooperative.
In 1989, he was elected as a Councilman in General Roca. A councilman helps make decisions for the city. He then became the mayor of General Roca in 1991. He was re-elected mayor in 1995 and served until 1999.
Becoming Governor of Río Negro
In 1999, Miguel Saiz became a provincial deputy. This means he represented his province in a larger government body. He also led the Río Negro branch of the Alliance. This was a group of political parties that worked together.
Saiz was elected governor of Río Negro Province in 2003. He won against another politician named Carlos Soria. As governor, he became a strong supporter of President Néstor Kirchner. Kirchner was a left-wing leader from the Peronist political movement. Saiz helped create a group called "K Radicals." These were members of his UCR party who supported President Kirchner.
Re-election and Later Years
Miguel Saiz ran for re-election as governor in 2007. He competed against Miguel Ángel Pichetto from the Justicialist Party. President Kirchner decided not to get involved in this provincial election. Saiz won his re-election by about 5% of the votes. He had the support of several other political parties.
Because he supported President Kirchner, his membership in the UCR party was temporarily stopped. Later, in 2011, he decided to stop supporting Cristina Kirchner, who became president after Néstor Kirchner. Miguel Saiz passed away on October 22, 2019, in Buenos Aires.
