Early Life
Mike Lamond was born in Bakersfield, California. For the first 11 years of his life, he lived in Nipomo, California. Later, his family moved to Beavercreek, Oregon.
Career
Becoming an Esports Commentator
Lamond was a big fan of real-time strategy games, where players build armies and battle in real time. He started playing the original StarCraft when he was 11 years old and played thousands of matches online.
He became interested in the world of professional gaming, or esports, after watching a streaming service from South Korea that showed professional StarCraft matches. This inspired him to start his own YouTube channel. On his channel, he added his own commentary to recordings of professional games.
His channel grew very popular, especially when he began commentating on StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty in 2010. At one point, he was uploading about 100 videos every month.
Success on YouTube
During the testing phase for StarCraft II, Husky and another commentator named HD hosted the HDH Invitational. This was an online tournament for 16 of the best StarCraft II players. The games were broadcast on YouTube, and the tournament even had cash prizes for the winners.
In July 2010, Husky and other casters launched a new YouTube channel called The Game Station. The goal was to present gaming videos in a professional style, similar to how sports channels like ESPN cover traditional sports. The channel became very successful, partly because of Husky's popularity. He later moved to Los Angeles to work full-time for The Game Station.
Husky explained why he thought StarCraft was a great game to watch. He said, "The level of skill and mental precision required to play StarCraft 2 at the highest levels is completely mind-blowing. This is why it is an extremely fun sport to watch."
Leaving Esports
In early 2015, Husky stopped posting videos and commentating on tournaments. For years, people wondered why he had left. In 2019, he explained that he had to quit for health reasons. The fast-paced style of his commentary had started to damage his vocal cords.
After a long break, he brought back his YouTube channel. Now, instead of focusing on gaming, his channel is more about his life with his partner, Rosanna Pansino.
Other Projects
Throughout his career, Husky has been involved in many creative projects.
- In 2012, he helped sponsor an esports team called Axiom ESports with fellow commentator TotalBiscuit.
- In 2013, he directed and starred in an internet series called Broken Quest.
- He also created music video parodies with Kurt Hugo Schneider under the name Nerd Alert.
Personal Life
In 2018, Rosanna Pansino shared that she and Lamond were in a relationship. He often appears on her YouTube channel, Nerdy Nummies, and also works as a director and producer for the show.
