Michael John Montgomery (born February 27, 1947) is a retired American basketball coach. He is famous for coaching the Stanford team for 18 years (1986–2004). During his time at Stanford, he led the team to 12 NCAA Tournaments. This included a trip to the Final Four in 1998.

Before Stanford, Montgomery was the head coach at the University of Montana (1978–1986). After Stanford, he coached the Golden State Warriors in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for two seasons (2004–2006). He finished his coaching career at the University of California (2008–2014). He officially retired from coaching after the 2013–14 season.

Over his 32 years coaching college basketball, Montgomery led his teams to 16 NCAA Tournaments. He also won 6 conference championships. He achieved nearly 700 victories in his college career. In 1991, he led Stanford to win the NIT championship.

Early Life and Education

Mike Montgomery was born and grew up in Long Beach, California. He went to Millikan High School there. Later, he attended Long Beach State. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education from Long Beach State.

He then went on to get a Master's degree in physical education. This degree was from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Montgomery was also a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity during his time at Long Beach State.

College Coaching Career

Montgomery had a very successful college coaching career. He coached for over 30 years at Montana, Stanford, and California. His total record was 677 wins and 317 losses. This means his teams won most of their games.

He had winning seasons in 31 out of his 32 years as a head coach. His Stanford teams were especially strong. They reached the NCAA tournament for ten years in a row, from 1995 to 2004. In 1998, Stanford made it to the Final Four under Montgomery. This was the first time the school had reached the Final Four in 56 years.

In 2002, Montgomery also worked with the US national team. He was an assistant coach for the 2002 FIBA World Championship.

Before becoming a head coach at Montana in 1978, he was an assistant coach. He worked at Montana for two seasons. He also spent three years as an assistant at Boise State. Before that, he was an assistant for one season at four other schools.

Montgomery received many awards for his coaching. In 2000, he was named the Naismith and Basketball Times Coach of the Year. He also won the Pac-10 Coach of the Year award four times. After leaving Stanford, he received the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2007, Montgomery returned to Stanford University. He worked part-time as an Assistant to the Athletic Director. His job included helping with fundraising and public relations. He also mentored other coaches at Stanford.

On April 4, 2008, Montgomery became the head coach for the California men's basketball team. In his first season, the Golden Bears won 22 games and lost 10. They made it to the NCAA tournament. However, they lost in the first round to Maryland.

On February 27, 2010, Cal won against Arizona State. This victory helped them win at least a share of the Pacific-10 Conference championship. It was the first time the school had won this title since 1960. On March 6, they beat Stanford, Montgomery's old team. This win secured their undisputed conference championship. Cal lost in the finals of the Pac-10 tournament. However, they still got a spot in the NCAA tournament. They were defeated by Duke, who went on to win the national championship.

Montgomery announced his retirement from coaching at California on March 31, 2014.

NBA Coaching Career

Montgomery left Stanford to become the head coach of the Golden State Warriors. This happened on May 21, 2004. He coached the Warriors for two seasons. In both seasons, the team had the same record: 34 wins and 48 losses. The Warriors ended Montgomery's contract on August 29, 2006.

Personal Life

In October 2011, Mike Montgomery shared that he had faced some health challenges. He had been diagnosed and treated for bladder cancer. After a surgery, Montgomery announced that he was "cancer-free."

Montgomery is married to Sara. They have two grown-up children. Their son, John, is also involved in basketball. He works as an assistant coach at Hawaii.
