Michael Charles Phillips (born March 24, 1956 – died April 25, 2015) was a tall American basketball player. He was 6 feet 10 inches (208 cm) tall and played as a center. He played basketball professionally for eleven years in Spain. This included six years in Spain's top-tier league, the Liga ACB.

High School Hoops

Mike Phillips played basketball at Manchester High School in New Franklin, Ohio. He played there from 1970 to 1974. In 1974, he helped his team win the Ohio state AA basketball title. They had a perfect record of 26 wins and 0 losses that year. Mike scored 2,573 points during his high school career. This is the 7th highest score in Ohio high school history!

College Basketball Star

Phillips went on to play college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats. He played for coach Joe B. Hall. Mike helped Kentucky win a national championship in 1978. He played alongside Rick Robey, who was 6 feet 11 inches (211 cm) tall. Together, they were known as the "Twin Towers" because they were both so tall.

Phillips played for the Wildcats for four years. He earned honors in the SEC. He was named to the second team in his second year and third year. In his final year, he was on the third team. During his senior season, Phillips scored more than 10 points per game. This was for the 1978 national championship team. Overall, Phillips finished 25th on the school's career scoring list. He scored 1,367 points (11.4 per game) and grabbed 755 rebounds (6.3 per game).

Professional Career in Spain

After college, Phillips was chosen by the New Jersey Nets in the 1978 NBA Draft. However, he never played in the NBA. In 1979, he moved to Spain and had a very successful career there.

Phillips played for six years in Spain's top basketball league, the Liga ACB. He won an ACB league championship in 1981 with FC Barcelona. During his time in the ACB, Phillips scored 4,423 points (23.2 per game). He also grabbed 1,765 rebounds (9.2 per game) in his six seasons.

Later Life

Mike Phillips passed away on April 25, 2015, at his home in Madisonville, Kentucky. He was 59 years old.
