Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mikiw was an important Native American village. It belonged to the Chumash people, who lived in what is now Santa Barbara County, California, in the United States.

Mikiw: A Historic Chumash Village

Mikiw was a large and busy village. It was home to many Chumash people long ago. The village was located right on the Pacific coast. Today, this area is known as Dos Pueblos in the city of Goleta, California.

Where Was Mikiw Located?

Mikiw was part of the beautiful Goleta Valley. It sat right by the ocean. Just across the Dos Pueblos Creek to the east, there was another Chumash village called Kuya'mu. These two villages, Mikiw and Kuya'mu, were very close to each other. They were both right at the edge of the sea.

Early European Visitors

European explorers visited Mikiw centuries ago. In 1602, an expedition led by Sebastián Vizcaíno stopped near the Goleta Valley. They saw the Chumash village of Mikiw during their journey.

Later, in August 1769, a Spanish missionary and explorer named Juan Crespí also saw Mikiw. He wrote about his visit. Crespí described both Mikiw and Kuya'mu as "very large villages." He noted they had "vast numbers of people" and "a great many houses." He also mentioned that these towns were "at the very edge of the sea." His words show how impressive and populated these Chumash communities were.
