Miles's Education Journey

Miles Reid went to Trinity College, Cambridge to study advanced mathematics. He earned his Ph.D. (a very high university degree) in 1973. His important teachers, Peter Swinnerton-Dyer and Pierre Deligne, helped him with his studies.

Miles's Career in Math

From 1973 to 1978, Miles Reid was a research fellow at Christ's College, Cambridge. In 1978, he started teaching at the University of Warwick. He became a full professor there in 1992.

He has written two well-known books for university students:

  • Undergraduate Algebraic Geometry
  • Undergraduate Commutative Algebra

Awards and Special Honours

Miles Reid has received many important awards for his work in mathematics.

Royal Society Recognition

In 2002, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very high honour for scientists in the United Kingdom. In the same year, he was invited to speak at a big meeting for mathematicians in Beijing, China.

Prestigious Math Prizes

He won the Senior Berwick Prize in 2006. This was for a paper he wrote with other mathematicians about 3-dimensional shapes in algebraic geometry. In 2023, he was given the Sylvester Medal by the Royal Society, another major award for his contributions to mathematics.
