The Story of Milkybar
How Milkybar Began
The Galak brand was first launched by Nestlé in 1936. At that time, Nestlé was known as Nestlé-Peter-Cailler-Kohler. There was a lot of competition in the Swiss chocolate market. Galak was special because it was the very first white chocolate brand ever created.
Milkybar Advertising
The Famous Milkybar Kid
Since 1961, a character called the Milkybar Kid has appeared in TV ads for Milkybar. The Milkybar Kid is a young child with blond hair and glasses. They usually dress like a cowboy. Their famous saying is "The Milkybars are on me!".
These advertisements often take place in a Wild West setting. Both real actors and animated characters have played the Milkybar Kid. For a long time, the character was always a boy. But in 2010, an 8-year-old girl from New Zealand, Hinetaapora Short, was chosen for the role.
In countries like the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, the ads used to have a jingle. It talked about "the goodness that's in Milky Bar." More recently, the jingle was changed. Now it talks about "the good taste that's in Milkybar."
Galak's Dolphin Ads
In France, the Galak brand used a cartoon character to promote its chocolate. This was the white dolphin Oum from the 1971 animated series Oum le Dauphin Blanc. Characters from the show appeared on Galak packaging and in commercials.
In these ads, two children, Yann and Marina, and Oum the dolphin would often defeat bad guys. These villains included pirates or sharks. Nestlé stopped using this cartoon in 2003. However, some products with Oum's picture were still sold in 2004. This led to a legal case over who owned the rights to the characters.
Different Kinds of Milkybar
Milkybar Wowsomes and Mix Ups
In 2018, Nestlé released a new chocolate called Milkybar Wowsomes. This chocolate had 30% less sugar than other Nestlé chocolates. They reduced the sugar by making it airy and porous. Nestlé thought it would dissolve faster and taste just as sweet. This was to meet people's wishes for healthier products. However, Wowsomes were stopped in mid-2019 because they didn't sell well. A Nestlé representative said they weren't as creamy as regular Milkybar.
In 2019, Milkybar Mix Ups were launched. These were a mix of white chocolate buttons with a cocoa filling. They also included milk chocolate buttons with a cream filling. They were made using a similar method to Rolo chocolates.
Milkybar Around the World
Milkybar can be a bit different depending on where you buy it. In Australia and New Zealand, Milkybar does not contain cocoa mass or cocoa butter. Because of this, it is not called "chocolate" there.
Milkybar is very popular in South Africa. The Milkybar sold there is a white chocolate-like treat. It is made with milk powder, sugar, and vegetable fats. These fats include palm, shea nut, and illipe seed. Nestlé South Africa makes this version. Even though some places call it "white chocolate," it doesn't have cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is a key ingredient in true white chocolate.
