Mill Branch (Cacapon River tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mill Branch is a small stream, like a mini-river, that flows for about 9.1 miles (14.6 kilometers). It's a "tributary," which means it's a smaller stream that flows into a bigger one. Mill Branch flows into the Cacapon River. The water from Mill Branch eventually joins the Potomac River and then flows into the Chesapeake Bay. This whole area where the water collects is called a "watershed." Mill Branch is located in the eastern part of Hampshire County in West Virginia.

Where Does Mill Branch Start?

Mill Branch begins high up in the mountains! Its journey starts from springs on a mountain called Timber Ridge. This spot is about 1,306 feet (398 meters) high. It's located south of West Virginia Route 127, close to a small community named Good.

Mill Branch's Journey

From its start, Mill Branch doesn't flow in a straight line. It "meanders," which means it twists and turns like a snake. It flows towards the southwest, running alongside the western side of Timber Ridge.

Another mountain, Bear Garden Mountain, is on the other side, to the west of the stream. So, Mill Branch flows right between these two mountains. A road called Smokey Hollow Road (also known as County Route 6) runs next to the stream on its eastern side.

The stream then flows under a bigger road called the Northwestern Turnpike (U.S. Route 50). It keeps flowing along the eastern side of Bear Garden Mountain.

When it reaches the southern end of Bear Garden Mountain, Mill Branch makes a turn. It curves towards the northwest. Soon after, it flows under Christian Church Road. After that, it empties its water into the Cacapon River. This meeting point is south of the town of Capon Bridge.
