Mill Creek (Opequon Creek tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mill Creek is a stream about 14.5 miles (23.3 km) long. It flows into Opequon Creek. Mill Creek is part of the larger Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay water systems. You can find it in Berkeley County, which is in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. The creek got its name because many mills used to be built along its banks. One of the first mills was built by Morgan Morgan in the 1700s near what is now Bunker Hill.

Where Mill Creek Starts and Flows

Mill Creek begins with several small streams. These streams are found on the eastern side of North Mountain. This area is in northern Frederick County, Virginia. The creek then flows into Berkeley County, West Virginia.

It continues to flow north, staying close to the eastern side of North Mountain. Along the way, many smaller streams join Mill Creek. These smaller streams are fed by natural springs.

Mill Creek then turns northeast, heading towards the old town of Gerrardstown. From there, it winds and turns east along Gerrardstown Road. The stream goes under County Route 24. It then turns southeast, flowing through hills. More small, unnamed spring-fed streams add to its flow.

After passing under County Route 24/3, Mill Creek gets bigger. It then flows under Interstate 81 and through the community of Bunker Hill. East of Bunker Hill, Mill Creek runs next to County Route 26. Finally, it winds southeast through a narrow valley. Mill Creek then empties into Opequon Creek. This spot is south of Tarico Heights, near the border of Berkeley and Jefferson County.
