Mill Green Museum is a cool place in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England. It's a real working watermill, which means it uses water power to grind grain! The main building is very old, built in the 1600s. It's even a special historic building called "Grade II* listed," meaning it's super important.
Inside the old miller's house, there's a fun local museum. You can explore different rooms that show off art and interesting stories about the area.
History of the Mill
This amazing mill uses the power of the River Lea to turn its big wheels. Mills have been here for a very long time! The Domesday Book, a famous survey from over 900 years ago, mentions several mills in Hatfield. People believe one of them was right here at Mill Green.
The last person to use the mill for business, Mr. Lawrence, moved to Australia in 1911. But don't worry, the mill was fixed up and works perfectly again! It has old wooden machines from the 1700s and 1800s. Today, it still grinds special organic wheat. This flour is used by a local bakery and you can even buy it at the museum!
Visiting Mill Green Museum
The Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council helps manage the mill and museum. When you visit, you can walk around the mill and see how it works. You might even get to chat with the miller who is on duty!
Mill Green Museum also has lots of fun activities. They offer workshops where you can learn crafts or how to bake. There are special activities just for kids, and they even welcome school groups for educational visits. It's a great place to learn about history and how things used to be made!
